Diamond Education: The 4 C’s of Diamonds

CUT

The proper cutting of diamonds is the most essential thing to do, as it reflects the beauty of the diamond. A well-cut diamond gives an ambitious look and maximizes stone beauty. After proper cutting of the diamond, the stone’s size will be reduced by half, but the diamond’s market value will increase up to four times because of its sparkle. This ability can be maximized only by cutting diamonds accurately.

SHAPE

The shape of the diamond describes the elegant outline of the stone and its pattern. Stone can be cut in different shapes like Round, Emerald, Oval, Heart, Pear, and many more.

DEPTH

The diamond-cut by depth is the reason for its magnificent beauty. Depth of diamond can be cut in three types Shallow cut, Deep cut, Ideal cut. Out of these three ideal cuts would be considered as the best cut, as its light reflects the most.

POLISH & SYMMETRY

Polish and symmetry are considered as the essential aspects of the cutting process. Diamond’s polish shows the smoothness, and symmetry shows the alignment of facets.

COLOR

In the market, Diamond is found in every color. Despite all these, Brown and Yellow color diamonds are most common. A rare difference in the color of a diamond can make its different value in the market. A transparent or colorless diamond will be considered the most valuable as it gives the path to the light, and also, it is rare to find a colorless diamond. If you are not able to see the true color of the diamond then look at it against the white background to see its original color.

COLOR GRADE TABLE

CLARITY

Clarity refers to the presence or absence of flaws present outside or inside the diamond, or it refers to the diamond’s purity. When Flaws occur inside the diamond, they are known as inclusions. Types of inclusions include needles, knots, chips, cleavage, feathers, clouds, etc. When Flaws occur outside the diamond, they are known as blemishes. Blemishes are used to cut the near-surface inclusion to increase the grade of the stone. Types of Blemishes include naturals, scratches, polish lines, nicks, pits, etc. There are many flaws that are not able to see by the naked eye, but under magnification, you can be able to see and notice tiny feather-like bubbles, crystals, shapes, and flecks. All these flaws make a diamond look unique from others. Also, it affects the value and beauty of the diamond. The good clarity of the diamond is based on its size, nature, number, and location of the fixture of the finished stone. The diamond which has higher clarity will be more valuable in the market by comparing it with the diamond that has certain inclusions.

CARAT

The term carat simply refers to the weight of the diamond. The term carat is derived from carob seeds, which means consistency in weight and shape. The weight scale was established in 1907. The carat is divided into 100 parts, which have their own classification. If it comes to comparing all four C’s to know about the value of the diamond, then carat weight is the most accurate and can be easily balanced.

Large diamonds are more valuable as they are rarely discovered in comparison with small diamonds, it is a fact about diamond’s weight and price. The price of a diamond depends on its size. A Single two-carat diamond is worth more than two diamonds of one carat of the same quality.
